Murphy, John Arther (64), of Antigonish, died suddenly on Sunday. John Arther was born in Hillcrest, Antigonish County, the son of Bernard and Catherine (MacDonald) Murphy.

He was a wonderful and devoted father, grandfather and husband. He will be forever remembered for his generous spirit, keen sense of social justice, and his strong desire to understand and help the people around him. He was a kind, gentle and caring presence in his community near and far. He was passionate about making the world a better place for us all and renowned for his unlimited hospitality and sense of humour. John Arther studied at St. FX University and graduated from Social Work at Ryerson University. He worked for Development and Peace for over 25 years. His time with Development and Peace allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life here and around the world. His passion and skills to work with and engage people led him naturally to politics. John Arther was active in the New Democratic Party for over 35 years; he was a committed campaigner, candidate, and he worked at various levels of the provincial party. He was currently the Provincial President. His energy and enthusiasm for provincial politics was boundless. His other work included numerous community boards and organizations, Minor A sports, Maritime Fishermen’s Union. He was always ready to lend a helping hand.

John Arther will be dearly missed by his three children, Flora (Francisco Gomes), Michael, Lindsay and granddaughter Mica Lindsay Gomes, his wife Barbara de Marsh and her three children Edwin (Kristen Bell), Lila, and Emilie Pavey, his siblings Theresa (Brian) Flynn, Anne Murphy, DJ (Karen) Murphy, Florence (John) MacLean, Salva (Wayne) Doll and his large extended family.

He was predeceased by his wife Lindsay Myers, his parents, and his brothers Fraser and Hughie Murphy.

Visitation in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Funeral will be held in St. Ninian's Cathedral on Friday, February 20th at 11:00 am. In Memoriam, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society - Nova Scotia Branch, the Lindsay Health Centre for Women, or the Stephen Lewis Foundation appreciated.
