James Wilfred "Jumbo" Johnson

Johnson, James Wilfred "Jumbo", 63, of Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation, Antigonish County passed way on July 8, 2012 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Bayfield, Antigonish Co., he was a son of the late Francis and Margaret (Simon) Johnson.

Jumbo was a carpenter by trade and worked on building many of the houses on the Reserve including the Band Office, the old Medical Centre, the gym and the fishery boathouse. He also worked on foundation construction with Jody Gillis Construction and earlier worked for many farming companies in Maine was a blueberry and potato harvester. Jumbo was an avid bingo player and a great community man who was always available to lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Basque; children: Leslie (Paula) Paul, Wilfred (Belinda Denny) Johnson, Crystal (Brandon Bernard) Johnson, James Jr. (Crystal Andrews) Johnson, Mary Margaret Johnson, Donna (John) Bernard, all of Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation; brothers: Daniel Johnson, Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation; Benjamin Johnson, Ohio; sisters: Mary Jane Paulette, Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation and Doris Hanscomb, New Brunswick and sixteen grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his step father, Vincent Paulette; brother, Rodrick Johnson and God child, Melissa Johnson.

Visitation will be in the family residence, 8 Ardena's Lane, Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation after 4:00 pm Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton with Reverend Charles Cameron presiding.. Cremation to follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
