Diane Louise Alcorn, 84, of Antigonish passed away on August
24, 2015 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
Born in Kingston, Nova Scotia, she was the eldest daughter of
the late Ronald Wentworth Parker and Love Berniece (Baltzer)
Parker.
A professional musician and mezzo-soprano, Diane was a
recipient of numerous honours, including the Nova Scotia Talent Trust
Award. She attended Dalhousie University in Halifax and the Royal
Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In addition to her performing
career, including work with symphony orchestras and nationally
broadcast concerts (CBC Radio), she was a beloved choir director,
private teacher, and a member of the music faculty of St. Francis
Xavier University. She hosted radio programs in the 1950s (Trinidad,
West Indies) and '60s (CJFX, "Songs I Like").
For a period of 20 years, beginning in 1973, Diane owned and
operated the Curiosity Shop, a much loved boutique in the heart of
Antigonish.
A gifted craftsperson, she constructed costumes for numerous
Theatre Antigonish productions.
With her 1996 move to Toronto, Diane began a new career,
shifting her focus to jazz and released several recordings, the first
of which received an ECMA nomination as Jazz Recording of the
Year.
She is survived by her children, John (Ronnie Burkett),
Toronto; Mark (Marilee), Ottawa; Emmy (Blair Pellerin), Guysborough;
Andrew (Janice), New Glasgow; and Jamie (Nance Ackerman), Halifax;
grandchildren, Coco, Natalie, Robyn, Lindsay, Rory, Zoe, and Jodie
Alcorn and Cailen Pygott; great-grandchildren, Keira, Malachy, and
Ellie; sisters, Sally Horsenell, Donna McGill, Mary Patten, and Holly
Cole, all of Berwick.
Predeceased by her husband, Reverend Russell Harland Alcorn
and her son Peter.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 and Thursday
from 2 to 4pm in the C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street,
Antigonish. There will be no service.
