Margaret MacIntyre, 101, of Antigonish formerly of Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, passed away peacefully at the R K MacDonald Nursing Home on May 14, 2016. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Born in Reserve Mines, NS, Margaret, was the daughter of Alex S. Maclntyre and Sadie (Clarke) Maclntyre.

As a young woman, Margaret studied at Mount Saint Bernard College in the Business and Secretarial program. She was employed in Toronto, ON at Blue Cross; and later in Antigonish, as a bookkeeper for businessman, Albert E. Whidden. Subsequently, Margaret joined the Business Office at St Francis Xavier University where she worked until her retirement.

Margaret was an avid reader, who loved a good mystery novel, had a keen interest in current and political affairs, and enjoyed music, especially classical. She also loved to drive and to recount the thrill of receiving her first driver's license and her first car when she was a young woman. Complementing her quiet and pleasant demeanor, Margaret had a determined and independent spirit which she maintained throughout her life. In addition, she had a strong sense of social justice which was instilled by her parents. She witnessed their perseverance and struggle when Alex S., a labour leader, participated in organizing the labor movement in Cape Breton during the 1920's. Later, when he joined the Extension Department at St Francis Xavier University, she again saw his tireless dedication to the goals of the Antigonish Movement. Following her fathers sudden death, Margaret returned to Antigonish to share the responsibility of running their family guest home the Cornish Arms Lodge.

Margaret was predeceased by her sister, Georgina (Allan MacNeil); brothers, Allister (Vina) and Reginald (Kaye); and nephew, Kevin "Mackie."

Special thanks to the staff at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home who provided excellent care and a warm and respectful environment during the last three years of Marg's life. Cremation has taken place; there is no visitation by request. Funeral Mass will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of C.L.Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish.
