Van Oirschot, William Johannes,
age 86, of Ashdale, Antigonish Co, passed away on May 21, 2016 in St.
Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Holland, he was a son of the late Michael and Anna
Maria (Scheepens) Van Oirschot.
Bill immigrated from Holland in 1954 with his wife Adriana
(Audrey). He first worked at Bethany and then purchased a farm in
Ashdale in 1959 developing it into a successful dairy farm. He took
great pride in his herd of purebred Holstein cattle and served the
farming industry by participating on several boards and committees,
including Nova Scotia Animal Breeders Association, Eastern Dairyfoods,
Federation of Agriculture, and the Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition. He
was co-founder of the Eastern Nova Scotia Holstein Club. Bill was a
recipient of several longtime breeder awards from Holstein Canada. He
was very active and involved in sports while growing up and that
passion for following sports continued throughout his
life.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Adriana Van
Alebeek; children: Anne Marie (Andy) Horne, Goffs, Halifax Co.; Gerry
(Bonnie), Ashdale; Audrey (Keith) Dewar, Regina; Fran (Marc) Gallant,
Halifax; Michael (Sandy), Ashdale; siblings: Joe (Anne), Pleasant
Valley; Ida (John) Vermeer, Pleasant Valley; Anne (Frans) Van Rooy,
Holland; Frans (Mien), Holland.
He loved and was a very special Opie to grandchildren Ian,
Adam, Garett, Blair, Nancy, Kyla, Stephanie, Courtney, Scott, Lauren,
Kathryn, Ryan, Carson, Tyler and six great
grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Wilhemenia, in
infancy.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College
Street, Antigonish, on Tuesday, May 24th from 7 to 9 pm.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 25th at 11:00 am in
St. Joseph's Church, St. Joseph’s with Father Dan MacDonald
presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations in memory may be made to the Autism Society of Nova
Scotia.
