Campbell, Sister Mildred, formerly Sister Mary Denis, 89, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in the 57th year of her religious life.

Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the fourth oldest in a family of seven children born to Daniel William and Eunice Sarah (MacPherson) Campbell.

Prior to entering the Sisters of St. Martha in 1949, Sister Mildred graduated from New Waterford General Hospital’s School of Nursing and received her R. N. certification. She worked in several areas of nursing in Sydney, N.S. and in several hospitals in U. S. A. In 1956 she received her Nursing Registration in Massachusetts. In 1957, Sister did her Nursing Surgical Residency and Infection Control at Boston University School of Medicine.

Sister Mildred entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1957. She pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1959 and her perpetual commitment of vows on August 15, 1964. She re-entered the nursing field after a short refresher and ministered in Antigonish, Nova Scotia at Bethany, R. K. MacDonald Guest House, St. Martha’s Convent on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University and at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish. As well, she served in Nova Scotia at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, St. Rita Hospital in Sydney and Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso. In 1969, Sister Mildred went to St. John’s Hospital in Lowell, MA and served there for ten years.

Ever faithful to prayer and the nursing ministry, she engaged herself in preparing to follow-up more directly with the sick and dying. While in Lowell, Sister Mildred did part-time study in Clinical Pastoral Education at Newton-Andover Massachusetts and at Lowell University. She received certification, and served in Pastoral Care at St. Rita Hospital and Cape Breton Manor in Sydney, St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge, AB, and Bethany’s Extended Care Unit in Antigonish, NS. Sister Mildred was the local group leader in four of the communities of sisters in which she lived. Because of failing health, Sister returned to Bethany in the year 2000.

Besides her parents, Sister Mildred was predeceased by brothers Donald, Rev. Cyril, OMI, Rev. Dennis M., and Raymond. She is survived by one sister, Carmella Murphy and one brother Clayton.

The remains will be resting at Bethany beginning (today) Wednesday, June 29th at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 30th at 2:00 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home of Antigonish. Online condolences: www.clcurry.com
