Hoskins, Ethel
"Alice", age 97, of Antigonish passed away
peacefully on July 16th, 2016 at St. Martha's Regional
Hospital.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, she was daughter of the late Sir
Stopford Brunton and Elizabeth Porter. She was predeceased by her one
brother, Dr. Lauder Brunton.
She was married for 26 years to the late Ralph Hoskins and is
survived by her three children, Andrew Hoskins, Elizabeth Wilkinson,
and Rosemary Overzet; 7 grandchildren: and 7 great-grandchildren. She
is also survived by her long-time friend and caregiver, Veronica
Charleton (whom she considered a third daughter).
Alice was a teacher, artist, writer and philanthropist. She
first pursued the study of fine art at L'Ecole des Beaux Art and the
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design under Arthur
Lismer. She graduated from teachers college in 1968 and taught art at
Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds, Quebec. In 1972 she travelled to
Australia and taught art in a Sydney suburb for two years.
In 1974 she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia and attended the Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design (NSCAD). She received a Bachelor of Fine
Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art Education from NSCAD.
She worked at the Citadel Gallery and then later (starting in 1975) at
the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia under Bernie Riordon. Amongst other
accomplishments, she was very proud of curating the Robert Field
exhibition. During this time she also completed a graduate program in
Leisure Studies at Dalhousie University. Over the years, Alice has
generously provided for the Alice Hoskins Gallery of International
Art, a permanent exhibit space in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in
Halifax. Alice was an avid volunteer, teaching art to children and
adults, as well as visiting the elderly in their homes and at the R.K.
MacDonald Guest House. She promoted the theatre and acted in several
local theatre productions herself. In recognition of a lifetime of
service and practice in the arts, she received an honorary degree from
St. Francis Xavier University in 2007. She has written and illustrated
four books, two about her travels to Japan, a children's book and,
most recently, words of advice for the aging and house-bound Many will
remember her for her watercolors and from seeing her painting in and
around Antigonish.
