Ronald A. "Ronnie" Gillis, 78, of Antigonish, died peacefully at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on Thursday, August 18th 2016.

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late John A. and Geraldine (Bates) Gillis.

Ronnie was the Postmaster at STFX University Post Office for 36 years and was also in charge of the gowns for graduation. He was a member of the Antigonish Volunteer Fire Department and captain of the rescue squad. He also spent many years on the back gate at the Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 59, and was either loved or hated by every bingo player in Antigonish.

Ronnie is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Della (MacCulloch), sons, John Hugh (Janice), Antigonish; Larry, Stellarton; Gordon, Antigonish; and daughter Ruth (Ian Healey), Halifax. He was the proud Papa of granddaughters Kylie (Alex) and Kenzie (Colin) all of Antigonish; brother Joe, Massachusetts; sister Sally, Sydney;  sisters-in-law Bernadette and Joan of Antigonish and Mina of Quispamsis, New Brunswick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronnie was predeceased by brothers Fr. Larry, Gerry, John Hugh, Cyril (Veronica), Chris, and Bernie. Sisters Mary, Sr. Aileen, Sr. Anne, and Jane.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 21st,  from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in C.L. Curry  Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Family flowers only, and family requests that visitation be scent free due to allergies. Funeral Mass is Monday at 1:00pm at St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Reverend Donald MacGillivray.  Burial in the parish cemetery.

Due to allergies, the family requests no flowers and that visitation be scent free.
