Mattie, Wayne Robert, age 67, Bayfield, Antigonish County It is with great sadness the family announce the sudden passing of Wayne which occurred at home on March 21, 2017.

Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Francis and Margaret (Smith) Mattie.

Wayne cared about family. As his children grew up, he was there for them; he fathered them, coached them, encouraged them, teased them, and made them laugh. He was devoted to his wife and best friend Alice, and they together enjoyed travelling to visit their grandchildren. Community was also important to Wayne and he spent 33 years documenting milestones like baptisms and weddings, and was known to have his tractor down the road to till all the neighbours gardens in the spring. He worked hard all his life and was a proud member of the Boilermakers Local 73. Wayne was passionate about hockey. He recorded games for Antigonish Minor Hockey, Junior A. Hockey, and St. F.X. Hockey, and his relationship with the coaches and teams ran deep. He cared for and encouraged the players and they all became his second family.

He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Alice (Connors); children: Jody (Megan); Jamie; Johnny (Cathy Lee); Jerry (Rieneke); grandchildren: Bryn Jana Lee, Jack Arthur and Andi Lee; brothers: Lyle (Kathy); Gerard (Audrey), Davie (Anita), Garnet (Stella); Brad (Bernadine); sisters: Nellie Cypher; Iris Stanley; Gail; Barbara (Billy) Snow; Della (Wilfred) Myette; Bonnie (Billy) Ryan; and special sister Tracey.

He was predeceased by his very special and only daughter Jana Lee on June 12, 2006; brothers: Jimmy, Blaise, Allan, Melvin, Hughie; sister Catherine "Tuggie" brothers-in-law, Paul Stanley and Sandy Connors.

Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and Saturday from 10:30 to 1:00 pm. Funeral will be held in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie on Saturday at 2:00 pm with Reverend John Barry presiding. Burial in the parish Cemetery at a later date.
