Long, William Gerald,
age 71, of Antigonish passed away on June
16, 2019 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late William and
Annie (MacDonald) Long.
Bill received his early education at St.
John’s Academy in New Glasgow, went on to graduate from St.
F.X. University in
1969 and St. Martha’s School of Nursing in 1978.
He was a dedicated nurse at St.
Martha’s Hospital for thirty years. He
was an avid reader, liked to play golf, but
was a very
private man. Big in stature and kind in
heart, Bill was a ‘mild and gentle
giant’.
He is survived by his wife of forty-five years,
Charlene (MacDonald); sister Adeline Long, New Minas and
Charlene’s
brothers and sisters, and
many nieces and nephews
who were a big part
of his life.
Predeceased by sister, Shirley and brother, Richard, and
infant brothers Donald and Colin.
Cremation has taken place.
In keeping with Bill’s wishes,
there will be no
visitation or funeral service.
Special thanks to family
physician, Dr. Patsy Allan, the doctors and
nurses in the Dialysis, ICU and PCU
Units at St.
Martha’s and a special thank you to Dr. Jane
Anne Howard who
showed great care and compassion and became Bill’s
‘best buddy" in his final
days.
Donations in memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
