Johanna C. "Joanne" Van Gestel
Van Gestel, Johanna C. "Joanne", a long-time residient of Antigonish Landing, died peacefully in the presence of family members on July 6, 2019 at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born on December 28, 1929 in Best, the Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Wilhelmus and Oda (Schoemakers) Van den Berk.
Joanne emigrated to Canada in 1954, settling in Antigonish with her husband Tony, where she raised a family of nine children. She was a dedicated home maker for her family. Joanne also spent time working in the family business and served a valued role in support of growing the business ventures for the family. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening, playing cards with friends and family, bowling, knitting and travelling with her husband. Since 1996, Joanne was an active volunteer with the St. Ninian’s Catholic Women’s League and thoroughly enjoyed her time working with the staff at the Opportunity Shop.
She is survived by her children, Jenny (Tony) Overmars, Antigonish Landing; Wil (Gail) Van Gestel, Wolfville; Mary Doucette, Timberlea; Joanne (Sandy) Oicle, North Grant; Tony (Jan) Van Gestel, Antigonish Landing; Margie Van Gestel, Calgary,AB; Frank (Joan) Van Gestel, Truro; and Helen Van Gestel, Surrey, BC. She was also a proud Oma to 26 grandchildren and Super Oma to 14 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Antonius "Tony" Van Gestel, daughter, Suzanne Van Gestel; granddaughter, Vanda Oicle; brother, Johannes Van denBerk; and sisters, Miet Verhoeven, Nelly Timmermans, Mien Schellekens, and Delphina Van denVen.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11:00am in St. Ninian Cathedral, Fr. Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
