Abler, Thomas Struthers, age 78,
of Antigonish and formerly of Kitchener, Ontario passed away on
September 4, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish.
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he was a son of the late Louis and
Marion (Struthers) Abler.
Thomas was an anthropology professor at the University of
Waterloo, where he specialized as an ethnohistorian. He authored
numerous books, chapters, and papers in professional journals. He
became a Canadian citizen in 1987. Thomas sculpted and collected
military miniatures and was a member of the Ontario Model Soldier
Society. Thomas was a dog lover, particularly of Airedales. He had
been an avid hockey fan, especially of the Detroit Red Wings. Thomas
was very devoted to his daughter, Elizabeth, and they enjoyed Sharon
and Bram’s farewell concert together while he was still
healthy enough to take her.
Thomas is
survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, and his brother, Andrew of Otego,
NY; and predeceased by his wife, Trudi Bunting.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held
Wednesday, September 11th from 7
to 9 pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street,
Antigonish, NS. There is no service scheduled at this
time.
