Abler, Thomas Struthers, age 78, of Antigonish and formerly of Kitchener, Ontario passed away on September 4, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he was a son of the late Louis and Marion (Struthers) Abler.

Thomas was an anthropology professor at the University of Waterloo, where he specialized as an ethnohistorian. He authored numerous books, chapters, and papers in professional journals. He became a Canadian citizen in 1987. Thomas sculpted and collected military miniatures and was a member of the Ontario Model Soldier Society. Thomas was a dog lover, particularly of Airedales. He had been an avid hockey fan, especially of the Detroit Red Wings. Thomas was very devoted to his daughter, Elizabeth, and they enjoyed Sharon and Bram’s farewell concert together while he was still healthy enough to take her.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, and his brother, Andrew of Otego, NY; and predeceased by his wife, Trudi Bunting.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 11th from 7 to 9 pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish, NS. There is no service scheduled at this time.
