Layes, Daniel Bernard "Bernie", age 82, of Merland, Antigonish County passed away on November 25, 2019 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Cameron) Layes.

Bernie started his working career as a forester and trucker and had a contract with the Pulp Mill for over 40 years. A sunny day in the woods on his old porter was a perfect day for him. He was an avid race fan, loved sports, and enjoyed his beer. He will be sadly missed by his many employees from over the years.

He is survived by the love of his life and best friend, his wife of 56 years, Ethel (Breen); his children: Darlene (Mike) Halfpenny, Pleasant Valley; Donnie, Afton; Susan (Hugh) Chisholm, Afton; grandchildren: Sheena Halfpenny (Andrew MacDougall); Daniel Halfpenny and Rebecca (Brandon) Wile; great grandchildren, Leyera and Jasper; brothers: Francis, Billy, Melvin, Jimmy and Berkley; sister, Aileen; and brother in law, Bob MacLean.

He was predeceased by his siblings, John, Lawrence, Laura MacLean, Alex, Danny, Alec, Mary and Carol; granddaughter, Katrina Halfpenny.

Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie on Thursday at 2:00 pm with Reverend John Barry presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
