Born in South Harbour, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late George Angus and Martha Mary (Daisley) Fitzgerald.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren who called her "Nanny Clain", and her sugar cookies were loved by all. Her greatest passion was teaching and education. She was very proud to have attended Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional School and graduate alongside her eldest daughter. She then attended StFXU and received her BA with Honors and Major in English & History, and then onto her Bachelor of Education. She returned to Dr John Hugh Gillis to begin her teaching career there. Betty continued to tutor many students even after her retirement, including her grandchildren. She loved golf and bingo. Betty co-owned and operated the Beach Side Motel in Pleasant Bay for several years. Her and Bernie loved their home in Florida where they spent many winters. Betty also loved camping and spending time at the lake. During her cancer treatments her special friend "Margie" was so dear to her. She missed her dearly after she moved. After her diagnosis with cancer Betty’s inspirational Celtic quote that got her through the difficult times was "The devil whispered in my ear, you are Not strong enough to withstand the storm. I whispered in the devils ear. I am a child of God, a woman of faith and warrior of Christ. "I AM THE STORM".
