It is with great sadness that the family of John M. Juurlink announces his passing at home on August 7, 2020 at the age of 70, after losing his battle with COPD. John was born in Slootdorp Holland on April 2, 1950. He immigrated to Canada with his parents Rita and Henry Juurlink in 1951, arriving at Pier 21 on the Volendam ship.

John grew up in St. Andrews, Nova Scotia where he farmed as a young boy and was educated. He graduated from NSCC in 1971 and obtained his Red Seal in auto mechanics.

John had a quick wit, a kind smile, and an entrepreneurial spirit. He was a skilled businessperson who was happiest when spending time with his family, working in his shop, tending the fields, or lending a helping hand to friends, colleagues, and his community.

John was a hard worker who earned several top sales awards during his career. He began at Eastern Auto in Antigonish and at the age of 24 founded John Juurlink Sales & Service Ltd. in Antigonish, supplying farm equipment throughout the Maritimes until his retirement in 2003.

John will be remembered for his dedication and many contributions to growing the community of St. Andrews. He was the President of the St. Andrews Curling Club and a former Fire Chief at the St. Andrews Fire Department where he volunteered for 40 years.

John is survived by his mother, Rita; his loving wife of 50 years, Linda; his sons, Garrett (Stacy), Jonathan (Krista), and Gregory (Sally); his grandchildren, River, Ria, Logan, and Owen; his siblings, Alphonse (Claire), St. Andrews, Francis (Betty) St. Andrews, Gary (Lerma), Vancouver, Catherine, Ottawa, Mary Ann, Ottawa, Dorothy (Paul), St. Andrews, and Albert (Wendy), St. Andrews; and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his father, Henry.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael MacKenzie and staff for taking great care of John and helping him enjoy his final years with friends and family.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3 to 7pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.  Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday in St. Andrew’s Church, St. Andrews, at 11:00am, with Reverend Andrew Gillies presiding.  Visitors will be required to adhere to social distancing protocols at both the visitation and funeral, and masks are mandatory.  A recording of the service will be made available on the funeral home website shortly afterwards.

Burial in the parish cemetery.

In John’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Andrews Volunteer Fire Department.  Donations may be sent care of the funeral home at:
