Gavin, Dexter James, age 16, Havre Boucher.  It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and a friend to many.

Dexter James was born on September 18, 2004 at the IWK Hospital weighing only one pound.  He had a smile bigger than life and a heart to match.  A true earth angel, a miracle from the start.  He touched the lives of all who encountered him from day one.  A Grade Ten student at East Antigonish Education Centre, he was the heart of the school.  He enjoyed chatting with his classmates; best known for his high fives, infectious smile, and loving hugs.  He enjoyed delivering the daily mail and coffee to the teachers, helping in the cafeteria, shooting hoops in the gym, participating in Special Olympics track and field and bowling.  He also loved Thomas the Train and Lego, the color red, spending time with family, going to hotels (especially the pool and hot tub),  Toys R-Us,  travelling with his mom,  and watching Father Brown with Grammie, music, camping , swimming, campfires and the beach.  He loved Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (the 4 pack), pumpkin pie, chocolate milk, Subway and taco dip.  He was so excited to be sixteen years old because that meant he was old enough to get his license.  He loved four-wheeling and hunting with his dad and car rides with his big brother Dallas and he was also so happy to be a big brother to Dryden and Lilly.

He is survived by his parents, Chantale DeCoste (Jeff Fougere), Havre Boucher; Craig Gavin (Amy Lee Day), Merland; brothers, Dallas Gavin and Dryden DeCoste;  little sister, Lilly Dulian; Grammie Ann Benoit, Antigonish; Nannie Georgia Henderson (Elmer Bowie), Merland; aunts:  Brenda (Ernie) Bailey, Pam MacEachern, Donna Gavin (Clifford Pellerine) and Bonnie (Pat) Walsh; uncles:  Francis Landry (Kathy Dunnett); Victor (Alicia) Landry; Fabian (Cathy) DeCoste; Larry (Pat) DeCoste; Jonathan Decoste (Twyla MacDonald); Trevor DeCoste; Billy Gavin; John Gavin; special cousins: Shalynn Bailey (Ryan MacLellan) and Ryan Bailey.

Predeceased by grandfathers James "Jimmley" DeCoste and William "Bill" Gavin.

Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Monday from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Reverend John Barry presiding.  Donations in memory may be made to Eastern Highlands Special Olympics, 3693 Hwy#7, Antigonish Co., NS B2G 2L3.  On line condolences: www. clcurry.com

PUBLIC VISITATION PROTOCOLS

All visitors are advised to bring a mask when attending a visitation at our funeral home.  There are markings on the floor which indicate six-foot distances as well as markings that indicate 6 feet from the family.  It is important that you respect those markings, and physical contact with the family is to be avoided at all times.  The province's social distancing guidelines can be found here.

At the direction of the Province of Nova Scotia, we will not be handling Mass or donation money, though cards can be made available for you.  You will be asked to provide your name and phone number for the purposes of tracing should a case of COVID-19 be reported.

Anyone who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or who could be considered high-risk of contracting the coronavirus should avoid attending the visitation and funeral.  The list of COVID-19 symptoms can be found here.

We thank you for your understanding in these difficult times.
