O’Neill, Elizabeth Ann "Betty", BScN (St. FXU), Brierly Brook, a youthful 83-year-old, passed away on September 21, 2022, with Mary by her side, embraced by loving care in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

She was the daughter of the late Mike and Anne (Reilly) O’Neill of Sydney River.

Betty had a wonderful, varied, and accomplished nursing career.  She cared deeply for patients, staff and students and found great joy and satisfaction in teaching, leadership roles and obstetrics, including Director of Nursing at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish.  She supported all local charities. She loved all creatures great and small and delighted in nature.  She was president of the local SPCA for over twenty-five years. She was an avid sports fan, especially hockey and harness racing and was so sharp on all the stats.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  She is survived by her life-long and best friend, Mary Haley with whom she shared many interesting adventures. The members of Mary’s family treasured Betty and were proud and privileged to share her life.  She is also survived by many loving O’Neill cousins and countless friends, to whom she was extremely loyal.

Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Sunday from 1 to 5pm.  Funeral Mass will be in St. Ninian Cathedral on Monday at 10:00 am. Cremation to follow. Burial in Sydney River at a later date. Due to Covid 19 concerns, masks are requested at both the visitation and funeral.

Family flowers only please.  Donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Antigonish Town and County Palliative Care Society, P.O. Box 996, Antigonish NS B2G 2S3 or a charity of choice

Betty so appreciated all the care and kindness she received, and she faced her illness with inspirational grace and gratitude, sprinkled with her unique sense of humor.  Many thanks to Dr. Jane Ann Howard, Heather Brander RN, Tish MacKay RN, Dr. Massaro, Dr. Saliba and Dr. Amy Hendrix, PCU, Palliative Care and Oncology and all the supportive staff and departments.
