It is with heavy hearts that we, the O’Brien Family, announce the passing of Patricia "Pat" O’Brien in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on May 11, 2023 at the age of 70.

Patricia was born on December 15, 1952, in St. Rita’s Hospital in Sydney, Cape Breton; a daughter of the late Vincent Nash and Christene (MacLeod) O’Brien.

Patricia grew up in a large family of six boys and five girls.  She is survived by brothers, Joseph, Sydney; Gerard, Sydney; and Lawrence, South Side Harbour; sisters, Theresa Smeenk, Maryvale; and Irene, Halifax.

Predeceased by sisters Annette Brigley (Hubbards) and Mary Florence MacGillivary (Glendale); and twin brothers, Brian Joseph (Halifax) and Blaise Patrick (Glace Bay).

Patricia worked in environmental services in St. Rita’s Hospital in Sydney and in Antigonish at Mount St. Bernard, St. Ninian Cathedral, and then St. Martha’s Hospital until her retirement.  She was a parishioner of St. Ninian’s, where she served as Eucharistic minister.

Patricia loved everything about Cape Breton, especially her trips to all the Scottish concerts and Ceilidhs.  But above all, her favourite was the trip up River Denys Mountain to attend the yearly Mass at St. Margaret of Scotland Church.

The O’Brien family would like to send a thank you to Sr. Catherine MacGillivray, Sr. Kaiser, and all the nurses, doctors, staff, and visitors at St. Martha’s, the QEII in Halifax, and Cape Breton Regional Hospital for all their care and compassion and to Fr. Danny MacLennan for his hospital visits and Cape Breton chats.

As per Patricia’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish.  Online condolences:  www.clcurry.com
