Smith, John William, 89, of Northview Drive, Antigonish, passed away on May 1, 2011 at Green Meadows Community Residence in North Grant.

Born in New France, he was a son of the late Daniel and Flora (Chisholm) Smith.

John was an electrician. He worked in construction throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the 19th Field Artillery Regiment. He landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, participated in the liberation of Holland and Belgium and for the final days of the war was in Germany. He was a member of Arras Branch 59, Royal Canadian Legion, Antigonish. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed a great game of cards.

He is survived by children: Michael, Calgary; Ian (Pauline MacIntosh) Antigonish; Lisa (Brendan Reid) Halifax; Janet, Antigonish; Mark, Calgary; sister, Margaret Smith, Antigonish; brother-in-law Owenie McVicar, Antigonish and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife the former, Lois Patricia Morrison; sisters Florence McVicar and Mary Bowman

Visitation 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm Wednesday in C.L.Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral Mass Thursday at 2:00pm in St. Ninian's Cathedral. Burial in the Parish Cemetery.
