Peters, Matthew "Emmett",
61, of Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation, passed away on December
28, 2014 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Tyne Valley, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Matthew
and Mary (Labobe) Peters.
Emmett was a Traditional Elder and worked in both the federal
and provincial correctional facilities. He was also an Outreach Elder
for the Seven Sparks Program at the Halifax Friendship Centre. The
impact of his life-long work as a spiritual leader has had an enormous
reach throughout Mi'kma'ki and beyond.
He is survived by his wife, the former Judy Bernard; his
children, Carla Tibbetts; Annika Allen (Will); Matthew Peters (Chenoa
Ashawasegai); Molly Peters; Linda Peters; Crystal Peters (Leo
Marshall); Adrienne Peters; Jenna Peters and Cote Peters all of
Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation; 19 grandchildren; brothers: Eugene Peters;
John Peters: Joseph Peters all of Lennox Island, P.E.I.; sister: Irene
Sanipass (Joe John), Elsipogtog.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Ethan Walter Ashawasegai;
siblings, Hilda and Carmen.
Visitation will be in the family home at 35 Petow Loop,
Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation, after 5 pm today, (Monday). The late Mr.
Peters will be transferred to Lennox Island, P.E.I. on Wednesday for
visitation and traditional burial on Thursday at 12:00
pm.
A Salite' and Memorial Feast will be held on Tuesday at 12:00
in the Paqtnkek Gym.
