Michael Daniel Smith was
born on June 8, 1965, to the late John W. and Patricia (née
Morrison) Smith in Antigonish. He was the oldest brother to Ian
(Pauline MacIntosh), Lisa (Brendan Reid), Janet, and Mark.
Upon completing high school, Mike
trained as a machinist at the Canso Regional
Vocational School in Port Hawkesbury. He relocated to Guelph, Ontario,
applying his new trade. Following a couple
years as a ranch hand in British Columbia, he settled in
Calgary. While in Alberta, Mike achieved his
red seal as a certified plumber and was finalizing his credentials as
a pipefitter/gas fitter.
"Mike Smith", aka Rug,
Stone, or Mikey Dan, was an enthusiast of the great outdoors and would
gladly trade a roof over his head for a tent and forego a car for
bicycle. He would never refuse a home cooked meal and would make sure
there was no need to put the leftovers away.
A uniquely skilled craftsman, Mike was a
perpetual student of the physical sciences and connoisseur of new
ideas, good music and the traditions of Eastern Nova Scotia. A loyal
friend, he will be remembered for his wit, integrity and generosity,
but it was an unrelenting curiosity that questioned everything and
judged no one that stood him apart.
Although he lived in Alberta
for over 20 years, his home was Antigonish
and he loved the coastline beauty. He, his family, and his friends
were very thankful that he was able to spend his final days at home
until his death on January 12, 2015.
The exceptional care and respect
provided by the palliative care team, the VON, and the staff of St.
Martha’s Hospital gave tremendous comfort and ease to Mike
and family.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation
will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C. L. Curry Funeral
Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral service to be
held in the funeral home at 3:00pm on Saturday, with Deacon Art Riley
presiding.
Family flowers only,
please.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the
Tom Baker Cancer Center, Calgary, Alberta, or St
Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation –
