Mom died at the Milford Haven Home
for Special Care, Guysborough, on July 18, 2015 at the age of 83 after
a long struggle with Parkinson’s. Born June 3,
1932 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, to the late Frank and Clara
(Bruce) Turner, she attended at St. Agnes High School in New
Waterford, where she was a member of the girls basketball team -- the
1948 provincial high school champions, something of which she was very
proud! She graduated from and worked at St. Martha’s
Hospital as an X-ray Technician, where she made many long lasting
friendships.
Mom and Dad
were married in 1953 and together they raised 8 children supporting
them with guidance, love and words of
encouragement. Mom was an avid bridge player,
loved to sing, and was a member of various choirs over the years, but
her true joy was baking and making desserts for her children and
grandchildren to enjoy. There was always a big smile and lots of hugs
when her children arrived home for visits and she took exceptional
pride in her seven beautiful grandchildren. We love you Mom
and we are delighted that you have been so quickly joined by your
loving husband of 61 years, Paul.
Betty is
survived by her children, Maureen (John Halstead) Dartmouth; Kathleen,
Dartmouth; Bill (Kathy Gillis), Dartmouth; Michael (Sheila),
Antigonish; Mary Beth (David Floyd), Kentville; Cabrini (Mark Gavin),
St.Andrews; Leone, Dartmouth; and Robert, Dartmouth; grandchildren,
Bridget & Liam O’Halloran, Dartmouth; Corinne and
Michaela O’Halloran, Antigonish; Patrick
O’Halloran, Halifax; Olivia Floyd, Kentville and James
Floyd, Halifax; brother, Bruce Turner, Ottawa, Ont.; sisters, Jeanine
Chaisson, Ancaster, ON; Mercedes DeGagne, Ottawa, ON; and Beverly
Lamantia, Lindsay, ON; sister-in-law and special friend, Clare
O’Halloran, Antigonish, and sister-in-law, Ruth O'Halloran;
and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her
parents, she is predeceased
by her parents-in-law, Thompkins &
Olive O’Halloran and her sister Shirley Doucet, Guelph,
Ont.
Her family
wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Milford Haven
Home for Special Care. Their kind and gentle treatment of both our
parents was such a comfort to us all. We would also like to make
special mention of Diane & Paul Tomlik and Hubertina Stewart
for their love, friendship and support to Mom throughout the
years.
Cremation
has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday in C.L.
Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish, from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9pm. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 1:00pm in St.
Ninian Cathedral, with Reverend Donald MacGillivray
presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In
Memoriam, donations may be made to the Recreation Department of the
Milford Haven Home. Mom was an active participant in their
activities and would be happy to know we are supporting
them.
