MacDonald, Shirley Mae, Lower South River

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley, loving wife to John, and a wonderful mother to nine. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Shirley was the daughter of the late Alec R and Jenny (Popwell) MacNeil of Glace Bay. Shirley met her husband, John, in Toronto and after their marriage they moved to Goshen, Guysborough County where they raised their nine children.

In her early years she could be found, with a guitar in hand, singing at various concerts with her children. She had what some would say "a voice of an angel". She also had a great sense of humor and one wasn’t quite sure what she was going to say next.

She is survived by her loving husband John; sons: Johnny (Sharon); Joey (Wanda); Michael (Geri); daughters: Bev (Brian); Judy, Bonnie (Rick); Karen (Marven); Gina (Paul); Tanya (Dana); twenty-one grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother Frank MacNeil; sisters: Barbara Oldford. Joanie Ashe and Helen Boutilier and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother Donnie MacNeil; sisters: Annie MacLean, Mary Bonokoski, Laureen Rideout and Jennie Kublic.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Andrews Church, St. Andrews on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Reverend Gary MacPherson presiding. Donations in memory may be made to Antigonish Town & County Palliative Care Society or Cathy’s Place. Online condolences: www.clcurry.com.

Bad times all pass with the wind

Your hand in mine stills the thunder

And you make the sun want to shine."
