It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our sister, Joan Theresa MacArthur of Antigonish. She passed away peacefully at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on November 8, 2020 at the age of 62 after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her siblings.
Joan was born in Antigonish on October 6, 1958 to Walter Pearson and Theresa Ann (Wallace) MacArthur.
She is survived by siblings, Malcolm, Dartmouth; James (Barb), Vancouver; Anne (Tony), Vancouver Island; Mary, Antigonish; Eileen (AB), St. Andrews; and Robert (Kendra), Antigonish; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
For many years, Joan worked as a dedicated personal care worker with Antigonish Homemakers in Antigonish.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Joan’s family doctor, Dr. Jane Howard, and Dr. Mike MacKenzie, Dr. Ron MacCormack, the dedicated nurses in Palliative Care who made sure Joan was comfortable in her last hours, and the emergency response team and ER staff at St. Martha’s. A very special thank you to nurse Heather Brander who gave exceptional, compassionate care throughout Joan’s illness.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday in St. Ninian Cathedral at 11:00, Reverend Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
