Baccardax, Rev.
Peter J, age 92, of Tracadie, formerly of Pomquet
passed away suddenly on August 23, 2021 in St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Poirierville, Richmond
County he was the son of the late Alex and Jeanne (Boudreau)
Baccardax.
Father Peter received his early
education in Richmond County and then went on to St. Anne’s
University and Grande Seminaire in Montreal.
He was ordained on June 4, 1955
and served the Diocese of Antigonish at St. Agnes in New Waterford,
(1955-1956) and as a teacher at St. Francis Xavier University,
teaching French Latin and Theology (1957). He was
appointed Parish Priest of Ste. Croix Church in Pomquet in 1957 and
served the people of that parish until his retirement from the
Priesthood in 2014. Throughout those years he ministered to,
baptized, married, and buried three generations. Father Peter was a
man of the people, working beside his parishioners daily, growing
vegetables, fishing, cutting firewood, plowing the snow and so much
more. He was not afraid to pitch in and get his hands
dirty. One of his greatest passions was driving his
motorcycle and had several Goldwings over the years. He was
grateful to God for his second chances, the good health he enjoyed,
the wonderful people he served, and the care he received from Rose Ann
and her family in his last years.
Survived by one sister, Estelle
Bonna-Baccardax, Poirierville; many nieces and nephews, all
of whom loved their Uncle Fr. Peter; his extended family, Rose Ann
Septon and her family, Stephen Richards, P.J. (Kendra) Richards;
Marian (Gerard) Bennett; Melanie Richards who had a special place in
his heart and all Rose Ann’s grandchildren. He was
known as "Papa" to them all. He also leaves behind many good
friends, especially his AA family.
He was predeceased by brothers:
Alfred, Tobie, Paul; sister, Therese and two sisters in
infancy.
