Flory, George Francis, age 90, of Parkland Antigonish died peacefully in the John MacLellan Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, on June 6, 2022, with family by his side.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Albert and Lauretta (Barry) Flory.

George graduated from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. with a masters in Physics and Chemistry and taught in New York City and Concord, Mass. He retired from teaching in 1982 and moved his family to Antigonish to be closer to extended family and close friends while he pursued his dream of travelling the world at sea. He worked on a semisubmersible oil rig off Sable Island and with Texaco Marine Services as a merchant ship radio officer, retiring in 1995.  His work took him around the world, including Singapore, El Salvador, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal.

George moved to Halifax in 2003 to be closer to family.  He loved his family beyond measure and his devout Catholic faith sustained him throughout his life. He enjoyed travel, amateur and professional radio, and playing music, being a founding member of The Velvetones.

In his time in Antigonish, he was blessed with many great friends including Leo & Mary McCarron, Leonard & Alvina Sampson; Roger & Ina Porter; Archie MacLellan, and Walter Whitty.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jean (O’Neill) Flory, RN; cherished daughters, Patricia Cummings, M.Div., D.Min. (Brian, MD), Waterloo, ON; Carolyn Flory, RN; Palm Bay, FL; Mary-Beth Flory, RN (René MacKay), Crossroads Country Harbour; treasured grandchildren, Rebecca Morrison, Palm Bay; Elke and Erick Franck, Halifax; and David Cummings, Waterloo; brother, Walter (Gerry), Ipswich, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by sisters, Lorraine, Muriel, and Evelyn and brother, Albert.

Cremation has taken place.  Funeral Mass will be held June 15, 2022, at 11:00am in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding.

In Memoriam, donations to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation appreciated.
