Mary Catherine (Mamie) LongAntigonish Teacher, 101 years, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2022 at the RK Macdonald Nursing Home after a long and full life.

Born in Marydale, Antigonish Co. on October 1, 1920, Mamie was the daughter of Dan and Catherine (Chisholm) MacPherson. She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Dan Long, the love of her life. She lived on Brooklyn Street in Antigonish before moving to Halifax in 2002 to live with her only child Joann Sampson (Noel) and grandson son Aidan.

Mamie was a proud and well-known teacher having graduated from the Truro Old Normal College in 1940. She taught at schools throughout Antigonish County in Springfield, Lower South River, Heatherton, and Lakevale before moving to Toronto in 1951 where she taught at St. Teresas for 10 years. She was a devout Roman Catholic with rosary beads and prayers being a central part of her daily life. She was a lifelong CWL member and parishioner of St. Ninians Parish in Antigonish and later St. Benedicts in Halifax.

Mamie reached 101 years of age and was vital right to the end. A voracious reader of the Chronicle Herald paper and watcher of local news, there wasnt much she wasnt aware of and rarely a lexicon puzzle that could fool her. She was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby fan.

She will be remembered as a passionate, driven and thoughtful person who volunteered for many local organizations and had a great sense of humour. She would often say, "you cant have a good party without a good laugh". Mamie loved everything about her Scottish heritage - the music, the dance, the food, and the frugality. We have no doubt she is dancing her way to her cherished family.

Mamie was the last surviving member of her immediate Marydale family (Danny on the Flat) that included sisters Margaret and Sadie and brothers Dan William, Joe and Dan A (in infancy). She was blessed to be close to many of her nieces and nephews, good friends and neighbours over the years.

At Mamie’s request, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held 11 am on Wednesday, July 20th, 2022 at St. Andrew’s Church, St. Andrews with her beloved nephew Fr. Dan Macdonald officiating.

Donations may be made to the RK MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation or a charity of your choice.
