Sister Florence Annette MacLellan

MacLellan, Sister Florence Annette, 95, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish died at Mary’s Court, Parkland Antigonish on Sunday, July 24, 2022.  She was in the 73rd year of her Religious Life.

Born in Big Pond, CB, Nova Scotia, Sr. Florence Annette, was the daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (MacDonald) MacLellan.

She entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1947 and pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1949, and her perpetual commitment on August 15, 1952.

Before entering the Congregation, Sister began studies in Diagnostic Imaging at St. Rita Hospital in Sydney, and in 1944, received her designation with the Nova Scotia Association of X-Ray Technicians.  She served as X-Ray Technician in various hospitals owned or operated by the Congregation: St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay; St. Rita Hospital, Sydney; St. Mary’s Hospital, Inverness.  She ended her 25 years in Diagnostic Imaging at St. Rita Hospital.  For 20 of those years, Sister Florence was supervisor of the X-Ray Departments in which she worked. Sr. Florence Annette began a second career in the 1980’s when she studied at St. Paul University in Ottawa and received a certificate in Pastoral Care.  She re-entered the health care field ministering in Pastoral and Religious Care, mostly in Cape Breton at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital; St. Rita Hospital, Sydney; Sydney Community Health Centre; Cape Breton Regional Health Complex.  She retired from this second career after 32 years of service.  She continued to volunteer her time at various health care and residential facilities in the Sydney, CB area before retiring to Parkland, Antigonish.

Sr. Florence Annette held a deep care and concern for the needs of patients and their families.  This was evident in the way in which she embraced the Ministry of Hospitality by providing space for families who had loved ones in area hospitals.  Her compassionate, gentle, and prayerful approach was recognized in 2009 with the Dr. M.A. Mian Award.  She continued to live with this same manner of presence to all who lived and worked at Parkland, Antigonish

Besides her parents, Sister Florence Annette was predeceased by brothers Martin, Donald, Angus, and Bernard, and sisters Mary, Margaret, Hattie, Angeline, and Patricia.  She is survived by many devoted nieces and nephews and their families.

Following the recommendations and procedures during this time of COVID-19, the remains will rest at Martha Place, Parkland Antigonish, where a private Celebration of Vigil will be held followed by a private Liturgy of Christian Burial on Wednesday July 27, 2022, at 1:30pm in St. Martha Chapel at Martha Place,

Sr. Florence MacLellan
