Henke, Peter G. It is with great sadness that we announce that Peter Henke, age 78, of Antigonish passed away suddenly at home on October 18, 2022.
Born in Nurnberg, Germany, he was the son of the late Fritz and Elisabeth Henke.
Peter was a Psychology Professor at StFX University for 44 years, starting in 1972 where he helped drive an overhaul of the psychology department’s curriculum and focus. He put in place the psychology department’s first formal laboratory course. He loved teaching and research. As a teacher, he inspired generations of students, and many of them stayed in touch after leaving StFX. As a researcher, Peter made important contributions to neuroscience, with over 80 publications in prestigious academic journals and prominent books on neuroscience. Peter was an active member of the faculty, served as department chair, and participated in almost all department and major university committees. In 2019, he was designated Professor Emeritus.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Peter met his wife Linda in the checkout line of a grocery store in Miami, Florida (he was the cashier) and they were married three years later. He gave up his lengthy walks as he got older, but enjoyed watching his favourite game (soccer), taking long drives with Linda, connecting on video calls with the rest of his family, and going out weekly with his coffee club. Peter’s mind was very active, and he thoroughly enjoyed reading and sending interesting articles on different topics to his friends and family. Always the teacher at heart, he challenged people to think critically. We will miss him, his smile and his dry humour so very much. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Linda; daughter Debra (Christian Gaillard), Ottawa; and grandson Liam.
Cremation has taken place. Anyone who knew Peter will not be surprised that it was his adamant wish not to have a visitation or funeral service.
Donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Antigonish Food Bank, 166 College Street, Antigonish, NS B2G 1Y2.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish. Online condolences: www.clcurry.com.
