It is with great sadness we announce the death of Brian D. MacLeod of Antigonish, NS. Brian passed away on December 24, 2023, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, at 71 years of age. Brian was the founder and driving force behind MacLeod Group, the premiere nursing home provider in rural Nova Scotia.
Born in Cleveland, Nova Scotia, he was the beloved son of William and Katherine MacLeod. Brian developed his entrepreneurial spirit watching his father cut pulp in the woodlots of Cape Breton. The value of a hard day’s work and the sacrifices needed for success became the guiding pillars of the life he built for his family.
Brian was a builder of families, communities, and businesses. He was a fierce believer in the value of rural communities and spent his life building MacLeod Group in communities across the Maritimes. His business legacy includes MacLeod Cares, providing high-quality seniors care in 14 communities employing over 1,000 workers.
Devoted husband to the late Irene (MacKay) and loving father to William, Brian Douglas (Catherine), Sheumais (Taylor), and Jermal (Myrie). Brother of William "Bill" (Joyce) and Alexander "Sandy" (Marilyn) MacLeod.
Brian passionately believed that healthy places had vibrant cultures, so he contributed much time and resources to help communities celebrate their heritage. He supported many local causes in his home community of Antigonish and throughout the region by serving on numerous boards and causes including Mount Allison University, Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, Nova Scotia Community College, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Festival Antigonish Theatre, and Antigonish Highland Society among many others. Brian was a passionate supporter of his Scottish heritage and his local St. James United Church. Together, with his life partner Irene, they provided much support to causes they loved and to families that needed discrete support.
The MacLeod clan motto – Hold Fast – means that in times of trial you hold on, stoic in your pursuit, assured that time will provide the answers that the present may lack. Brian made his family proud. He held fast.

Visitation will be held Thursday December 28, from 7 to 9pm and Friday, December 29th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. The Funeral service will be held Saturday at St. James United Church, Antigonish, at 11:00am with Reverend Peter Smith presiding. Burial in Paddy’s Hollow Cemetery. The Funeral Service will be recorded and available on this webpage later Saturday afternoon.
