In our sorrow
we, Michael’s family, share the news of his passing on
January 16, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital,
Sydney.
Born in Glace
Bay on May 1, 1936, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary
(McLaughin) Curry.
A
third-generation funeral home operator until 2013, Michael was a
highly respected professional in the business. He attended
St. F.X. University, excelled in sports, and was a singer and coach
with the X Men of Note, returning to manage the family business in the
early 60’s. Apart from his dedication to work, his
community involvement included many years in the Knights of Columbus
and Rotary Club – a Past President. An avid
horseman, Michael enjoyed ownership, driving, and training of many
horses (pets with personality). An entertaining piano
player, his showmanship qualities continued in roles in
musicals.
Survived by
sisters: Charmayne and Eileen, Glace Bay; Rosemary (Nick)
Czifrik, Salem, N.H.; brothers: Arthur (Anne), Antigonish; Joe (late
Sandra), New Waterford; Ernie (Elizabeth), Antigonish; sister-in-law,
Joanne Curry, Antigonish; brothers-in-law, Ed (Ginger) Murphy, Sydney;
Kevin Peach, Glace Bay; niece and caregiver, Wendy Currie;
Jean’s son, Tom MacLean, Glace Bay; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was
predeceased by his wife Jean (MacLeod); sisters: Sr. Marilyn
Curry, CSM; Theresa Murphy; Florence Peach; brothers: Dr.
Bill (Cathy), Francis Gerard (Cecilia), Frank, Chuck, and John in
infancy; nephew, Bill Curry; and niece, Janice
Peach.
Visitation
will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, on Sunday from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9p. Funeral Mass will be in Holy Cross Church,
Glace Bay on Monday at 11am, with Fr. Norman MacPhee
presiding. Burial in St. Anne’s Cemetery at a
later date.
