Nichols, M.
Bertha, of Lochaber died on her 94th birthday, March 20, 2024, in
High-Crest Sherbrooke Home for Special
Care.
Born in Lochaber, she was the only child of the late
Robert and Alice (Inglis) Nichols.
Bertha is survived by cousins, Martha Brown (her
caregiver of recent years), Antigonish; Dorothy Ostewig, Sherbrooke;
Stewart Reeves (Judy), Ottawa; and David Brown (Renée),
Lochaber.
Bertha began her teaching career in the one-room
Lochaber School that she herself had attended and was built by her
grandfather. Her father had been chairman of
the local school board, and education was always a priority in the
Nichols family, including for the women. When
old enough, she attended Normal College in
Truro.
Following her graduation, she taught in New Glasgow,
Greenwood, and spent the majority of her career in Dartmouth, retiring
from Dartmouth High School. During this time, through summer
schools and evening courses, she earned her B.A. and B. Ed. From St.
Mary’s University.
Bertha always thought of Lochaber as her home. She
maintained the family home where she was a hostess extraordinaire for
her family and the many friends she made and treasured. The
Nichols house was her happy place.
A celebration of her life will be held in Lochaber
United Church on Tuesday, March 26th at 2:00pm
with Reverend Meredith Marple presiding.
Reception will follow in Lochaber Community
Centre.
A private family burial will take place at North Lochaber
Cemetery.
In Memoriam, donations to Lochaber Community Centre or
a charity of your choice appreciated.
A sincere thank you to the staff of her last two
residences:
namely The Maples Antigonish and especially High Crest
Home for Special Care in Sherbrooke, where she was given truly loving
care.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L.
