Sarah Fels
Lancaster died Friday August 30, 2024, after a life-long struggle and
recent relapse. Sarah cared fiercely for her loved ones and worked so
hard to stay with us in the face of devastating mental illness. She
leaves behind the many who treasured her: the love of her life, Jason
Day; her heartbroken family; parents, Ian and Lai Im; brothers, Mark
(Casey) and David (Tiresa); sister, Courtney (Greg); beloved nieces
and nephews, Isabel, Orin, Eloise, Henry, and Jones; her adored local
aunts and uncles, Jane and Maurice Smith and Richard and Bernadette
Lancaster; her cousin, Tiffany and family; her uncles and their
families in Malaysia, Singapore and California; and extended family
and friends around the world.
Sarah was
born in Mississippi, USA on April 23rd, 1974,
and grew up in Frasers Mills, Antigonish County. She was a gifted
student, and after attending the Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School,
she finished secondary school at the United World Colleges
International Baccalaureate program in New Mexico. She went on to
graduate as a First Class Scholar from Smith College in Massachusetts
and spent time in San Francisco and Minneapolis. Later she received
praise and recognition for her work with the Pew Charitable Trusts in
Philadelphia. Returning to Antigonish some 15 years ago, she was much
appreciated wherever she went, including work at Pleasant Valley
Nurseries and several years at Service Canada. With her return to
town, she and her family were buoyed by her reconnection and romance
with Jason. The two of them lifted each other up, taking pleasure in
getting out to the water, adventures on their boat, growing heaps of
garlic and taking wonderful care of their
relatives.
She will be
remembered for many things including her laughter, her green thumb,
her style, her sense of colour, her joy, and her dogged persistence
when it came to helping people.
Cremation has
taken place, and a visitation will be held at the C.L. Curry Funeral
Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. on Saturday, September
7th, 2024, from 2-5pm, followed by a private
celebration of life at a later date. In keeping with her care for
others, Sarah had a personal investment in multiple sclerosis
research. If so desired, memorial donations may be directed to MS
Canada.
