Rita Matilda (Burns) Delorey 1939 - 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Wife, Mother, and Nana, Rita Delorey, on September 30, 2024. She was born in Erinville, Guysborough County, on March 14, 1939, the daughter of Vieta (Burns) McKeough, originally from Grosvenor, and Gordon Burns, from Erinville. Rita grew up in a close-knit family, and her roots in the community of Guysborough County were always strong.
In 1964, she married George Delorey of Tracadie, and together they built a loving home. Rita was a devoted wife and a caring mother to their three children. She was always there for her family, putting their needs above her own. As her children grew and began their own lives, Rita expanded her nurturing nature to care for others outside the home, working as a family caregiver in the Antigonish area. Her empathy, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those she cared for left a lasting impact on many families.
Rita had a natural ability to make people feel heard and valued. She was an enthusiastic listener, engaging in long conversations with friends and loved ones, whether in person or over the phone. Her warmth and hospitality extended to her home, where she created a welcoming environment. Family dinners were always special occasions, and she took great joy in cooking, hosting, and enjoying the company of those she loved. Her favourite pastimes were a cup of hot tea, some old country music, and a lively chat.
Summers at the Delorey home were especially joyful, as Rita and George spent evenings on the patio deck surrounded by beautiful flowers that George lovingly tended to. The couple cherished these peaceful moments together, and their home was often filled with the laughter and conversation of visiting neighbors and friends. To Rita, her neighbours were like an extended family, and she valued the close relationships she built with them over the years.
Rita's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a dedicated member of St. Peter’s Parish in Tracadie, where she found comfort and community. Her involvement in the church was a source of strength, and her faith guided her through life’s challenges.
In the last year, Rita faced significant health challenges as her mobility declined, leading to extended stays at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. Despite her own struggles, she continued to brighten the lives of those around her, getting to know fellow patients and forming bonds with the compassionate hospital staff. Visits from family and friends were the highlights of her hospital stays, and she remained positive and engaged with those she cared about.
The family is deeply grateful for the dedicated care Rita received from the doctors, nurses, and support staff at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. The kindness and professionalism they showed throughout her illness, particularly during her time in Palliative Care, brought comfort to both Rita and her loved ones in her final days. Special thanks go to Dr. Rice and the nurses who provided such compassionate care. Rita leaves behind her loving husband of 60 years, George Delorey, her son Dr. Kevin Delorey of Tracadie, and her daughters Vicki McKay (John) and Maritta "Bam" Delorey, both of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, her granddaughter Marissa, Maritta’s daughter, of who she was incredibly proud, and who brought her joy and support throughout her life. Rita is also survived by her sister Betty Kell (Jack) of Lower South River, Antigonish County, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Vieta Burns, her sisters Viola and Eileen, and her brothers Gordie and Archie. Rita’s passing marks the end of an era, but her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday October 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Tracadie, with Father John Barry officiating. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery, where she will be surrounded by the community she loved so much.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Antigonish Breakfast Program, a cause close to Rita’s heart. A donation box for the program will be available at Tracadie Hall following the funeral service. The family greatly appreciates the support and love they have received during this difficult time.
