Edward David Chapman passed away peacefully with family by his side on February 23, 2026, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish, NS at the age of 86. Born on April 21,1939, in Springhill, NS he was the son of the late Carl Black Chapman and Gwendolyn (Hylands) Chapman.

David is lovingly remembered by his adored wife of 64 years, Gloria (Smith); their children Kathryn (Kevin Latimer), Shawn (Holly Hayes Ross), Michael, and Mark (Sam Cheng); brothers, Carl (Sheila Teed), and Gary (Sharon Calder); sister, Dorothy (Keith Meagher); grandchildren Robyn Latimer (Jeff Miller), Jake, and Jupiter; great-grandson Jonathan; sisters-in-law Alma (James) Kenney, Carol Smith, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son, Paul, stepmother Daisy (Corkin) Chapman, stepsister Gerene Roode, stepbrother Gary (Joe) Harrison and many other dear family members.

David began his career in 1956, joining the Air Force and becoming a radar technician. He then pursued university studies, beginning a degree in electrical engineering at Collège militaire royal du Canada (Quebec), completing it at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton). He later attended Royal Military College (Ontario), where he taught and earned a master’s degree in engineering. After serving for 13 years, David was honourably released from the military at the rank of Captain. David and family relocated to Cape Breton, where he quickly fell in love with the beautiful island and its people. Never one to shy away from a challenge, David and Gloria constructed their first home with hand tools and little to no experience. He obtained his B.Ed. from St.F.X. University, and taught engineering technology at the University College of Cape Breton (now Cape Breton University) for 24 years. He cared deeply about his students and their success. Upon his retirement, Dave and Gloria relocated to James River, NS.

Strength, optimism, and his zest for life saw him through life’s struggles. Over the years, David energetically pursued many outdoor activities - running, cycling, skating, cross country skiing and hiking. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed gardening, farming strawberries and Christmas trees, and beekeeping. He made his own wine and beer for friends and family to enjoy, while he entertained them playing the piano. Even into his eighties, he stayed active and could often be seen around James River enjoying daily walks and bike rides.

He loved music, poetry and was an avid reader, curious to learn everything about the world and universe. After retirement, he took courses at St.F.X. University, bought a motorcycle, and participated in various community activities. With his friendly nature, kindness, and sharp sense of humour, he had a gift for putting others at ease and formed many friendships throughout his life, which he treasured deeply.

Dave was an active member of the community, volunteering as a Beaver scout leader and working with many neighbours to establish the Frenchvale Road Volunteer Fire Department. He was a fierce advocate for causes that concerned him, such as local environmental issues and national issues related to criminal justice and supporting victims of violence.

Dave was a devoted, loving, and reliable husband, father, and grandfather. He shared his love of the outdoors, learning, and adventure with Gloria and his children, taking them on wilderness adventures, camping trips, and family road trips. As a grandfather, he continued that tradition, hiking, biking, and fishing with his grandchildren, teaching them about the natural world, and even helping with school projects. During his time at St. Martha’s, visits from family and friends brought him great comfort, and nothing brightened his days more than watching his great-grandson run around with boundless energy.

Throughout his almost four years living with cancer, David and his family were in awe and have gratitude for all the doctors, nurses and other caregivers across Nova Scotia - in Antigonish, New Glasgow, Truro, Halifax, and Sydney - whose expert care was matched only by their kindness. Special thanks to the Palliative Care team at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, the VON, and family and friends who supported Dave through this journey.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in Antigonish, NS in June 2026, with details to follow and burial will take place in the Mapleton Cemetery, Cumberland County.

If so desired, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to Palliative Care Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital through the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St. Antigonish.  Online Condolences: www.clcurry.com
