It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Leonie Vivian Almeda, which occurred on June 17, 2026, at Parkland in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Born in Havre Boucher on October 21, 1934, she was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Mark and Beatrice (King) Crispo.
In her younger years, Leonie joined the Sisters of St. Martha, where she pursued her passion for caring for others. She completed her studies at St. Rita's Hospital in North Sydney, Cape Breton and went on to work there as a pediatric nurse until she relocated to Boston in 1965. She built a distinguished career at Boston General Hospital, dedicating herself with great compassion to the care of children and their families.
In the early 1970s, Leonie left the Order and on July 16, 1977, she married Paul Joseph Almeda, and helped raise his four children, Mark, Paula, Peter and Billy. Following her retirement, Leonie and Paul returned to Havre Boucher in the late 1990s, where she continued to be a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Joseph Almeida, and by her siblings Theresa (John) Marko, Yvonne (Fernand) Dufour, James (Pam) Crispo, Father Bill Crispo, and Leon Crispo.
Leonie is survived by sisters Myrtle and Marie Crispo, Leola (Blake) Connor, Dolores (Lloyd) Leblanc, her late husband’s children and grandchildren, Andrew and Henri Almeda, as well as many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her sisters and brothers in faith who stood by her bedside with prayers and blessings, along with the wonderful staff of Mary's Court for their dedication and the extraordinary care provided to Leonie. A special thank you to nurses Stephanie and Janice, whose devotion and kindness went far beyond their duties, ensuring that Leonie was never alone and was made to feel loved and cared for up to her final days.
