We, the family of Gail Marie Marshall, 59 share the sad news of her sudden passing on June 24, 2026.

Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late George and Eunice (Bernard) Marshall and raised by her grandmother, the late Mary (Joe) Bernard of Paqtnkek. She left home at an early age and moved to Ontario with her aunt and uncle Judy and Albert Julian where she was raised with Juliana Julian (Mario), the late Alicia "Lish"Julian and the late Stanley Julian, all of Paqtnkek.

A kind and gentle soul, Gail found inner peace and healing in gardening, caring for animals and spending time in nature. She lived a life centered around kindness, not judging others, just reaching out to help others whenever she could.  She found happiness in the simple things in life and her acts of kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Her favorite color was amethyst/purple, which was also her birthstone, a fitting reflection of her gentle spirit and beauty.

Known to all as the Friendly Neighbourhood Environmentalist, Gail was a nature lover at heart who was deeply committed to protecting the environment. What began as an interest in history, antiques, and rock collecting led her on a lifelong journey of exploration and learning everything she could about the importance and value of the natural world. This passion inspired her to help identify Mi'kmaw traditional medicines and plants throughout Mi'kmawki, and she generously shared her knowledge with anyone who shared her passion.

Gail was dedicated to preserving Mi’kmaw plants and medicines. In recognition of her passion and contributions, the Peace and Friendship Medicine Trail team, of which she was a member, named a trail "Sweet Gail's Medicine Trail" in her honor—a lasting tribute to her love of nature, her commitment to environmental stewardship, and the knowledge she so freely shared with others.

Together Gail and Geoff Whalen had her one and only daughter baby girl, Mercadies "Mercy" Marshall of Paqtnkek.  Together they share the love for nature and enjoyed going on adventures. They loved going for walks, hikes, camping, fishing and learning about all the things nature had to offer.

She is also survived by her siblings, Ida Marshall (Rod), Wekoqmaq; Gloria Marshall, Paqtnkek; Danny Marshall, Potlotek; George Marshall, Potlotek; Robert "Rocket" Marshall, Paqtnkek; Krista Thompson (Isaiah), Paqtnkek; and Kimberly Julian (Bobby), Paqtnkek; and Godchild, Matrix Basque.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Clayton Bernard, Colin Marshall, and sister Mary Marshall, her grandparents, Noel and Annie Tena Marshall; Andrew and Mary (Joe) Bernard and Godparents, Peter and Helen Robinson. She joins the spirit world with her BFF Fred Sylliboy.

Visitation will begin Thursday at 19 Mug-A-Sun Road, Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation, beginning at 5pm until time of funeral Mass Saturday at 11:00am, in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, Reverend Dennis Lamey presiding. Burial in Welnek at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Summerside Road.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish (Nalikitquniejk).
