It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Rylan Avery Anderson, age 19, on July 18, 2026, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Rylan was born on April 23, 2007, in Antigonish, but Black Avon was his home. Rylan lived his 19 years with a quiet kindness, an infectious smile, and a laugh that could light up a room. He didn't need to be the loudest person in the crowd—his gentle nature, loyal heart, and easygoing spirit drew people to him wherever he went.
If it had a motor, Rylan wanted to be behind the wheel. Whether it was a motorcycle, a four-wheeler, a tractor, or the heavy equipment he had recently learned to operate while earning his Heavy Equipment Operator Diploma from NSCC Port Hawkesbury, he was truly in his element. But nothing compared to his greatest pride and joy—his beloved Honda Civic EP3. The day he bought that car was one his family will never forget. He was so proud, driving it every chance he got, happily showing off his new wheels to his friends. That little car wasn't just transportation; it represented his hard work, independence, and excitement for the future.
From the time he was a little boy, Rylan was fascinated by how things worked. He could often be found taking apart motors, transmissions, or just about anything mechanical, determined to understand every piece before putting it back together again. He had a natural gift for mechanics, and his friends quickly learned that if something was broken, Rylan was the one to call. He never hesitated to lend a hand, spending countless hours helping fix vehicles—sometimes only to head back out and break them all over again. Those moments, filled with grease, laughter, and lifelong friendships, were some of his happiest.
Above all else, Rylan loved his family. He shared a special bond with his brother, Cody, whose passion for cars and wheelers matched his own. Together they created memories that will be treasured forever. He was also fiercely protective of his little sister, Gracie. From the day she was born, everyone knew that if you picked on Gracie, you would answer to her big brother. As they grew older, their bond became even stronger. She looked up to him as her rock star, and in the end, she became his protector. Their love for one another was unwavering, a bond that nothing—not even death—can ever take away.
Rylan was the beloved son of Chad Anderson (Krista MacGrath) and Joanne MacDonald (Cameron Sullivan). He was a cherished brother to Cody and Gracie (Brody Richards), and a treasured grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He will forever be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, his generous heart, his willingness to help anyone in need, and the quiet strength that made everyone around him feel cared for.
Nineteen years was far too short, but the love Rylan gave and the memories he created will last a lifetime. His smile, his laugh, his love of engines, his loyal friendships, and the countless moments shared with those who loved him will never be forgotten. Though our hearts are shattered, we take comfort in knowing that the impact he made in such a short life will continue to live on in every story told, every engine started, every country road driven, every crushed peach Coldstream, every burnout, and every act of kindness done in his memory.
He is also lovingly remembered by his grandparents, Jerome and Barb MacDonald of Heatherton and Denise Anderson of Havre Boucher; his uncle, Jamie MacDonald (Raelene Spears); his aunts, Eilleen MacDonald (Josh Deal) and Adele Anderson (Gary Wood); his cherished cousins, Jalysa, Jackson, Ashton, Scotia, and Ainsley; and his special friend, Dwayne Myers, whose friendship meant so much to him. Rylan will also be deeply missed by his many extended aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing him.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Wayne Anderson; and great uncles, Raymond MacDonald, Jimmy MacDonald, and Archie MacDonald.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11:00am in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, with Reverend Dennis Lamey presiding.
