Webster, Catherine T. "Kay", 73, of Clydesdale,
Antigonish County, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at home
with her family by her side.
Born in St.
Clare's Mercy Hospital in St. John's, NL, on October 2, 1940, she was
the second child of the late James Joseph Whelan of Colliers,
Conception Bay, NL, and Mary Angela Tobin, RN, of Witless Bay,
NL.
During the war, the family lived in Witless
Bay before moving to St. John's. Kay was about six years old
when she started playing the violin and was introduced to classical
music through instruction from Brother Drainey. She
eventually became first violinist with the inaugural St. John's
Symphony Orchestra. In her early years in St. John's, she
was also a member of Miss Galway's Dance Academy.
Kay graduated with a BBA from St. Francis Xavier University in
Antigonish in 1973 and a BEd from Mt. St. Vincent University in
1974. While she was in Halifax, she also studied at both St.
Mary's and Dalhousie Universities.
Kay and her
husband, Don, opened their own CA practice in the late 1970s, where
they practiced together for over 30 years until her health started to
decline.
Kay loved life, especially outdoor
activities like fishing, hunting, and skiing. Her love of
dogs, particularly Great Danes, was a trademark on the StFX
campus. She and Don had a kennel where they had Labs and
bred hunting beagles for many years. Kay was an excellent
cook, as can be attested by the many guests of her home. Kay
firmly believed that all problems were solvable using the Newfoundland
Dictionary of Common Sense and the appropriate sociable
amenities.
She is survived by her husband,
Donald E. Webster, CA, Clydesdale; daughter, Dr. Dawn Webster, DDS
(Dr. Matt Evans, DDS), with children Amelia and Sarah, Victoria, BC;
Don's sons, Kevin E. Webster with daughter, MaKenzie, Antigonish; Kirk
A. Webster (Natalie) with daughter Ava, Aylesford, NS; Michael R.
Webster with children Mikayla and Chevy, Kentville; sister, Marie E.
(William "Duffy") McDonald, Lanark; niece, Dr. Michelle
Mertens, DVM, South Carolina; nephews, Dr. Ted McDonald, Fredericton,
NB, and John Whelan, Washington State, and their families; and cousins
and relatives back in Newfoundland.
Besides her
parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Dr. Patrick James Whelan
in 2001.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May
3rd, in the C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish,
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Funeral service will be held
Sunday, May 4th, at 2:00pm in St. James United Church with Reverend
Peter Smith presiding. Interment in Newfoundland at a later
date.
